Energy Shield

Resumo

Protects your Life by taking Damage instead. Rapidly Recharges if you don't lose Energy Shield for a short time.
Chaos Damage removes twice as much Energy Shield.
Damage from Bleeding and Poison bypasses Energy Shield to remove Life directly.

Energy Shield (abbreviated as ES) is one of the three core defences that can be found on equipment. It is associated with intelligence and acts as an additional hit points on top of life that recharges over time if the defender does not lose energy shield or life for a short duration. Bleeding and poison damage bypasses energy shield to damage life directly, while chaos damage deals twice as much damage against energy shield.

Mechanics

Damage mitigation

Energy shield protects life by being depleted first before taking damage to life.

Damage from Bleeding and Poison bypass energy shield, damaging life directly. However, Bleeding can only be inflicted by hits that cause damage to life. Certain items may also cause damage to bypass energy shield.

Chaos damage removes twice as much energy shield as other damage types. This does not affect the overall damage dealt. In the case that Chaos Damage deals damage to both Energy Shield and Life (or Mana) in a single instance of damage, it will not affect the Life or Mana removed.

Recharge

If energy shield is not at full and life or energy shield have not been lost for a short delay (also known as "start of Energy Shield Recharge"), it will begin to recharge 12.5% of maximum energy shield per second. Energy shield recharge is considered a form of recovery, but it is not regeneration. Any damage taken to Life or ES will interrupt recharge, restarting the delay timer.

Other forms of recovery do not interact with recharge.

With the Eternal Youth keystone, recharge will recover 12.5% of maximum life per second instead.

Effect of #% faster start of Energy Shield Recharge

Energy shield will start recharging if the character does not take any damage for a certain period of time. By default, this time is 4 seconds. It can be reduced with #% faster start of Energy Shield Recharge modifiers from passive skills and equipment.

Let r be the sum of #% faster start of Energy Shield Recharge modifiers (as a percentage). The delay period in seconds is given by:

For example, having 100% faster start of Energy Shield Recharge results in a delay period of 400/200 = 2 seconds.
